The Met Gala, an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, hosted by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, was truly one to remember. This event is most often described as ‘the most important and exclusive night in fashion’ and is appropriately held at the MET in New York City. Designers from all over the world emerge and aim to showcase their most daring pieces in hopes of further solidifying their reputation in the industry – all while raising money for charity of course.
This year, one designer in particular stole the show. Zac Posen, the 33 year-old American designer has successfully blown away the competition. – What competition?
Zac Posen has the ability to add drama and volume in places that once seemed impossible. Every design, more specifically every gown, appeared to have been literally fabricated onto the celebrities bodies. His designs elongate the female frame all while adding appropriate depth and emphasis. His fabrics are clean and classic; his colors, timeless. The construction and the exquisite tailoring of these gowns are that of another level of design, reminiscent of a mature mind – something it would seem, the average 33 year-old designer would not yet have the ability to accomplish or to conceive, yet alone execute. The drama he creates is that from fairytale pictures and truly entices envious on-lookers to be drawn into his fantasy.
This year’s Met Gala was held to celebrate the eternal genius of Charles James, the Anglo-American couturier who, according to Vogue, ‘has virtually defined our notions of nighttime elegance in the twentieth century’. In my opinion, Zac Posen possesses what it takes to define our century as potentially the most elegant and grand century of fashion.
