During the month of November, it’s common to find many gentlemen growing moustaches; fortunately, it isn’t a coincidence. The Movember Foundation aims to raise funds and awareness for men’s health programs by challenging men to grow their facial hair and, in turn, working as a walking and talking ad for Movember and the cause. This foundation was started in Australia in 2003, and has gained traction and fame throughout Canada and the U.S. over the past few years.

One of the most important elements of the Foundation is that it doesn’t aim to raise funds for one particular cause, but spread the wealth between multiple charities and programs. They aim to educate and empower men to be more aware of their health. From Adam Garone, and the Canadian Movember website, “In the last 10 years or so, using an online platform as our community hub, we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship. It’s these ingredients that have encouraged over 4 million men to sign up at and do their bit for men’s health by raising awareness and funds.” They place equal importance on raising money and awareness; they believe that the awareness itself is critical to the cause, as this is the part that helps men to take action.

There are many great ways to get involved, aside from growing a moustache. You can find numerous community and local events to raise money for the cause, and they accept donations on their website. If you are looking to join a great event, there is a Gala happening on the 28th of November. If you have a special man in your life, from a significant other to your brother or dad, make sure they are aware of all of the support and programs available to them to keep their health in check. We’ve put such an importance on women’s and children’s charities, and the men’s foundations tend to fall to the wayside. This month, make sure you keep an eye out for some funky moustaches, and spread the word about men’s health.
